Social Communication
What are Pragmatics & Social Communication Skills?
Pragmatics refers to the social use of language—how we use words and nonverbal cues to connect with others. These skills help children navigate everyday interactions, build relationships, and communicate effectively beyond just words.
Social communication includes a wide range of abilities, such as:
Understanding and using body language and facial expressions
Showing empathy and taking the perspective of others
Knowing when and how to start, maintain, and end a conversation
Taking turns during conversations
Adjusting language based on the listener or social setting
Following conversational rules like staying on topic and recognizing when someone is confused or uninterested
Why it Matters:
Strong pragmatic and social communication skills are essential for making friends, participating in group settings, and developing self-esteem. When these skills are delayed or disordered, children may struggle with peer relationships, classroom participation, and everyday interactions.
